Sunday May 29th, 2011

UWTL for the trifecta. I blame the holiday weekend. My day went a little something like this: breakfast sandwich, hospital, Mexican food, hospital, type type type, Apple Pan, Game of Thrones, trendy Venice bar, blog. I'll leave the specifics up to your imagination.

Looking forward to the extra day of rest and relaxation as well as the fact that the work week will be but 4 days. Pretty money.

Alright, I must stop this nonsense now. G'night.

Saturday May 28th, 2011

UWTL for the second straight night. In all fairness, plans for a big night turned into a medium+ night after 3 beers and out. Looking for an early start to tomorrow's pre memorial day Sunday so took a pass on the late night festivities.

Today was a good day, not particularly exciting or overly productive but just enough. Woke up late then got into a bit of a writing flow in the evening after some exercise and lollygagging. Wow, can't believe I actually spelled lollygagging right in one shot!

Anywho, as much as I'd like to stay and chat, there's much to do tomorrow and I should really be passing out sooner rather than later.

Will tomorrow night be a rare 3rd straight night of UWTL-ery? Stay tuned. Same bat time, same bat channel.

Buona notte.

Friday May 27th, 2011

UWTL on yet another Friday night. May not be the last time this weekend thanks to the holiday.

This memorial day weekend millions will flock to the apparent comedy event of all time, THE HANGOVER PART II but most of these people will be utterly disappointed in one of the more hyped summer movies in recent memory. I sadly can already be counted as one of them.

Saw the flick Thursday night and though i'd heard some rough things, I was still pretty pumped. I can't say I was as on board with the original as most everyone else back in the summer of '09, but I enjoyed the shit out of it and could definitely get on board with another ride with these oddly likable characters. To an extent, this is all I could take away from it's sequel. There's an attachment to these characters that is rare in big summer blockbusters. I mean does anyone give a shit about Sam in the Transformers movies? Not so much, though that will certainly be put to the test in a few weeks with the 3rd installment of Michael Bay's car/ robots blow shit up epic franchise.

Again, the connection and general empathy for the characters/ performers in this newly minted, and unlikely to die anytime soon, franchise, is most of what makes the movie even watchable. yes the thing looks pretty awesome, and yes there are a handful of great jokes. But overall, repeating the same structure and story beat for beat makes for a restless couple hours, full of glaring plot holes and empty cameos. As a writer, and a general lover of quality entertainment, it's really hard for me to buy something that entirely apes it's predecessor, with minimal to no concern for concocting a somewhat compelling and interesting story for the paying customer to invest in and enjoy. Whatever you want to say about the first film comedy-wise, this was something it's script had in spades. A genuine mystery, where you never quite new where things were going to go or what whacky turn the story was going to make next. This one sucks all the joys of that out of it, and is probably the only movie in recent memory to feature the great Paul Giamatti in an entirely forgettable, throwaway role.

It's sad to say, but who would have thunk that DUE DATE would be the best Phillips/ Galifianakis flick of the pair. At least that one ripped off a movie from over 20 years ago, that was in an entirely different franchise.

So for all the rest of millions who flock to the theaters to be wowed yet again by the wolf pack. I implore you to soak in the few moments before the lights go down and the coming attractions run along, and enjoy that moment, cause that will be the best moment of the moviegoing experience, almost without a doubt.

Friday May 20th, 2011

UWTL after a long day of work. I literally just got home 30 minutes ago and as much as I wanted to go right to sleep, it's WTL for that yet. Just noticed something pretty amusing for me and my childish sense of humor but my last post was my 69th, so let's call this 69+1, and everypost thus forward 69+ whathaveyou.

So Friday night, coming home at 1 o'clock, especially for you east coasters this must seem pretty humdrum and unremarkable. But I did not just arrive home from a night out on the town. I left work at 12:45 PM tonight, and you want to know the strangest part? It was entirely of my own free will. Now let's not heap praise upon me because I didn't stay to work work work from 8 til almost now. I stayed somewhat out of solidarity to my boss and the rest of our writing staff who had some serious work to trudge through, but mostly cause it was an opportunity to get in the writer's room for a change.

This is a space, as a Showrunner's assistant, I do not find myself in very often. As a matter of fact, the last time I was in there while our writer's were hard at work breaking stories for the soon to be newest Lifetime sensation (excuse the inaccurate marketing), it was my first week on the job. We operate on a cable budget, which is very little, thus we're a little understaffed. One day our writer's assistant, who also moonlights as our writer's PA had to go on a run, and I was called in to come in and take notes. This was the moment i'd been hustling for, for a good year now in a tangible sense, but much longer than that in a more abstract sense. Sadly, I sat down in the room, and a small tangent ensued, something not necessarily in need of being notated. Just as the discussion was veering back towards the track, my co-worker returned and thus my presence was no longer needed.

Thus after a long day, when it became apparent dinner was being ordered, I asked if I stuck around, if I could join in the room and my request was accepted. After a small personal errand that took way longer than it should've, and a drive and pickup of some delicious Thai food for the evening meal, then the quick completion of this errand that'd been put on hold, I filled my plate and took my seat at the not so round table. For the next 4-5 hours there was lots of discussion to take in and little for me to contribute. And as every hour ticked by, my desire to either leave and go to sleep or leave and go out persisted. But the moment of escape never quite presented itself and that was OK, cause I was still happy to be there. Maybe the fact that I was eager to stick around reflects poorly on my current social life, or makes me sound like a big loser as you read this. But nonetheless, I have no regrets about putting in the extra time to sit and observe the pros at work. A workaholic I am certainly not, at least not at the moment, but being around and getting to see firsthand, something I one day aspire to contribute too, was a more than welcome activity for just another of many friday night's before, and hopefully many more to come.

Now despite kind of feeling like I could write a novel....or at least a few scenes of a script I should have finished a while ago, I'm gonna go to bed. Going on about 18 hours of awake now, and I unfortunately can't sleep the day away tomorrow as there's too much to do. Funny enough i'm actually going to be a hop, skip and a jump away from the office, almost literally, in less than 8 hours time. Big night ahead tomorrow too so gotta at least get in my 6 and a half or so.

Goodnight and sweet dreams. Hopefully the world will not end tomorrow and we can do this again sometime. And by we, I mean myself and maybe a smattering of friends who have a long meandering blog post to kill and who see this posted on my status or my Facebook or twitter or some inane apparatus of modern society.

Monday May 16th, 2011

Oh, I am tired, must sleep now. The tardiness in bedtime is directly attributed to a late burst of productivity that should have happened way way way earlier.

I fear that the more I share write now, the more awake I will become, which will lead to a cranky, moody, dozey day tomorronw.

Yawn, that is all, g'night!

Lakers SOS/ Purple Rain

Tonight was a good night filled with bad results. Amazing basketball game that ended very badly and brought the end near as early as ever it seems for my Lakers in the last decade plus. I had to put salt in my own wounds by periodically reading up on what I'd already seen with mine own two eyes. As if that wasn't enough, I watched the final disastrous minute of the game yet again at 2 in the morning, which has lead me to being up at this ungodly but Friday acceptable hour.

The other good but bad, and I don't want to be too negative here cause it was a good time, was seeing Prince at the Forum this evening. My third time seeing one of the legends of popular music, who at 52, continues to impress, but could barely focus long enough to play an entire classic song of his. The setting for the former artist formerly known as, the former home of the Lakers, only served to remind me of the last time things were this dire in Lakerdom back in 1999. No, the artist neglected to replay the song of that name. If he had it would have taken on a double meaning for me, party like it's literally 1999 and party despite your team being on the brink of an embarrassing sweep, the likes of which we haven't seen since that year. Since, it's been 7 finals appearance in 11 years, which despite my floundering faith, doesn't appear to be set for 8 in 12. For a brief somber moment in an otherwise fun late evening, I thought of the Nick Van Exel days and the lockout shortened, Kobe miss free throwing, Shaq being a friggin pussy days of yore, when my love affair with the purple and gold was fresh and new.

With the Lakers on the brink of disaster and shame, it feels only appropriate that I've been dwelling on another team in a similar spot back in 2004, that of the Boston Red Sox. It was my first year of College, in New England at that, and I found myself in Beantown just as things went from bad to good to great to historical as the Sox would complete the greatest rally in the history of baseball, and likely pro sports. The only difference was they were David up against the Yankee Goliath, and had absolutely nothing to lose. The Lakers are Goliath here, although a very aged and undisciplined one. But the thing about those Sox that I've been reminded of this week, was once their backs were against the wall, they threw all caution to the wind and became a ragtag bunch of carefree idiots who played the game as if it was there last, and made history as a result.

The question for this Laker team though is if they manage to stay alive Sunday and then take care of business on Monday, what will stand as their bloody sock as they attempt to do what has never been done in the history of the NBA? Maybe Pau will become like Schilling, rising from the dead to lead his team on a shocking run to the top. Like anything with this unpredictable bunch of fading champions, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the impossible became possible.

Saturday April 30th, 2011

Uwtl as April turns to May. Wow this month went by fast.

Today was one of the best Saturdays in a while. Very productive, full and satisfying. Read, wrote, chatted, ate, exercised, balled, drank. All in all top notch.

Hoping that Sunday is a close match if not exceeds it. Now for some sleep.
