The End is the Beginning is the End

Okay, Jeremy is Up Way Too Late is no more...... on Blogspot that is!

A posting crisis and the advice of my peers have lead me to convert an old Tumblr to:

Jeremyisupwaytoolate.tumblr.com

It used to be called jeremyisupwaytooearly.tumblr.com and actually proceeded this very blog.  I will prob streamline and include UWTL and UWTE all in one convenient location.

At the moment, i'm traveling in Europe so my nocturnal or diurnal musings may be a bit more exciting and accompanied by even more exciting visual stimuli.  But don't worry, i'll be back to my boring, uninteresting mundane self come mid November when I return to LaLa land (LA, not the world of former MTV VJ and current Mrs. Carmelo Anthony: LaLa Vasquez).

Just thought i'd let you know, here it is one more time!

Saturday October 15th, 2011

So although I write this from Istanbul at just a hair past midnight on Sunday October 16th, hardly within my UWTL parameters, I felt as if it is was only appropriate considering I haven't really gone to "sleep" since Friday night.

I've slept about 3 hours since waking up yesterday morning, here's what happened...

Tilted Paul / Millennium

With a 6:55 AM flight out of London this morning, I thought it was best to bypass a pricey hotel room that i'd only sleep in for 3-4 hours tops, plop my bags down at a friend's place and just try to make it through the night.  Sure it isn't ideal, but 4 hours of sleep on a plane after a 22 hour day is better than no sleep at all.

Here's where things went wrong.  When you're trying to stay up all night, best to conserve energy.  Running yourself and friends ragged around London all day, and eating the biggest portion of fish and chips you've ever seen in your life, is probably not the best way to accomplish such a thing.

That being said, save for 20 minute naps here and there in the late night and early mornings, I couldn't get any rest for the life of me, probably as a result of a tasty yet intensely sugary alcoholic beverage.  Ginger beer was involved.

Then after hours of trying to get a mini night's sleep with nothing but a pillow and a whitewall, it was time to get an early start on my airport mission around 3:45.

I was ready and raring to go as I boarded the bus to Paddington station, amidst the hustle and bustle of post 4am London (god why can't LA even have nights like that every other year, let alone every weekend).  The bus was a coup (is that how you spell coup, as in victory?) because I had thought for sure I'd have to take a costly cab, which is why my late night/ early morning was spent very frugally.  I arrive at Paddington a tad before 4:30, plenty of time to catch the earliest Heathrow express at 5:10 in the morning.  When I arrived there was no such train today as well as next Sunday, because of track maintainence.  The first train was scheded for about 9:30, only 155 minutes after my flight took off.

Where is Everybody?

Luckily, though again, with a price (oh London, how I adore thee), there was a nice Algerian cabby ready and raring to speed me to the airport for over twice as much as I had in my pocket.

An ATM and conversation about football, rugby and favorite actors later, I found myself at the airport well ahead of my expected, express train arrival time.  Security was nothing save for a bag rescan, then a delicious pair of Pret a Manger purchases later, I was rid of all my pounds (UK currency, not weight) and boy did I lose a lot of them over two nights.

That's all my brain and tired body can muster for now.  Pumped for a full day tomorrow, surely will have much to report and might just even go back in time to share some additional London misadventures with you.

Sleep tight.

Wednesday October 12th, 2011

OK, it's only 1:02 as I begin typing this.  Pretty good considering my UWTLness over these last few weeks.  I am def gonna be asleep soonish.

Manana, I wrap up my extended NY stay.  Was it everything I hoped and planned it would be?  No.  Was it pretty great regardless?  Yes.

Europe is the next stop, goin some places i've been and some places I haven't.  Don't think there's any way it too won't be pretty great.

Alright, short and sweet is how i'll keep it tonight.  Got a red eye to London tomorrow, thus it would behoove to get some frigging sleep so I can get UWTE, at least in comparison to my recent sleeping habits.

Goofnight (I typed this word by accident, but decided it was a pretty great goof, pun kinda intended, thus I did not correct myself.  Spelling is not my top priority in life).

UWTL talking bout The Book of Mormon!  Being the second to last night of my new NY stay, I decided to use the opportunity to make a last minute full court press to get into the play that is well, these days, damn near impossible to get into.  After a couple hours of lotteries, and standing, and waiting and texting and idle chit chat with fellow line standers, I actually landed a pair of tickets.

The show is in a very small theater (which is prob part of why the tickets are so hot) but we had awesome center orchestra seats, entirely worth the wait.

As my eyes wandered around the room, I saw a familiar and not so welcome face to my back right.  None other than the worst public figure in LA, Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt.

"Isn't this a nice photo of a nice man?" said the devil.

My first inclination was that this unfortunate sighting would surely ruin my evening that I had worked so hard to pull off (yes, standing in line for an hour or two is hard work for an unemployed person).  Then as I continued to look around the room, wondering what other awful LA sports figure might further dampen things, the couple sitting next to me made a joke that my friend probably left me there.  That is when I decided to share with them the fact that the awful owner of the dodgers was sitting just over there.  They were from Canada and not particularly into baseball, so didn't get it.  And I think I came off as a crazy zealous fan talking about how this man's presence was ruining my night.  If only they new the baseball atrocities this man has commited.

Anywho, despite the bad karma brought into the theater, the show did indeed go on.  I won't get into too much details but the show was quite good.  Didn't come close to meeting my expectations, but this thing was being made out to be the greatest singing and dancing achievement in the history of ole' Broadway, but that it was not.  What it was, was a really well made, funny, ironic musical that is def worth the price of admission.  It's like an awesome south park episode, or a collection of many blasphemous southpark idea outtakes thrown into one singy, dancy, acty stew of goodness.

See it if you can, and take solace in the fact that the worst owner in professional sports will not be present to harsh your mellow (that's right even including Donald Sterling and the recently deceased Al Davis).

Alright, it is way way way way way past my bedtime.  To sleep I go...
