Thursday April 7th, 2011

Did not intend to be up anywhere near this late but procrastination and Gchat will do that to you.

Baseball's back but for a lifelong Dodger fan, it's anything but exciting right now. I've been pretty heated/ disgusted by this franchise this week. I can deal with dim prospects on the field or even embarrassing steroid busts, but I can't deal with lowlife owners and ritual parking lot beatings. If you're in LA and have been living under a rock this week, then maybe you didn't hear about the Opening Day beat down of an innocent Giants fan. There have always been plenty of shady, drunken, idiotic types filling up the Ravine, but a few individuals reached a new low by beating a fan within an inch of his life after an easy Dodger win mind you.

The occurrence itself was appalling enough on it's own, but it was our wonderful owner Frank McCourt's response, or lack thereof, which proved truly disturbing. After releasing a pedestrian joint statement with the Giants and MLB, the boys in blue have been deathly silent. Not an apology or a genuine well wish. The closest they've gotten to action or attempting to take responsibility is encouraging fans to contribute to this man's medical bills. FANS pay!? As if they were responsible for this egregious act because of the bad taste of 2 of our own? If anything the Dodgers as an organization should be offering to pay the bills in full and take care of this man in any way he needs. Instead, our cowardly owner who even before this seemingly couldn't get any more unpopular, remains silent. Trying to continue to save face when there isn't even an eyelash left to save. If there was any uncertainty of the kind of person Frank McCourt was, there's absolutely no doubt no. He's a fundless millionaire who's out for nothing except his own self interest. Maybe he'll buy another home with way more money than it would take to do the right thing and foot the proper bill, not the 1500 dollar dinner bill that is probably common place in his life.

As sad as it is to say, we can only hope that a number of good things can come out of this stupid stupid situation. First, that going to games becomes safer and people of all classes and creeds and inebriations respect each others right to cheer for and don their team colors. And second, that LA will finally be rid of the McCourts, no matter what corporate monster or a-hole takes over the team.

Gotta go to sleep now, more on this soon.

Saturday April 2nd, 2011

Been a little while since my last post. What can I say? I'm quickly becoming an old man and 1am is generally way past my bedtime these days. That and I get particularly lazy about blogging on the weekends.

Wanted to take this moment to plug a couple of wonderful entertainments that have been so beautifully gifted to our universe this weekend.

The First: Duncan Jones and Ben Ripley's wonderfully entertaining, emotionally satisfying and thought provoking new film, SOURCE CODE. I must say, I run a little hot and cold on Mr. Jake Gyllenhaal but he came up spades here. Add along the brilliant Jeffrey Wright and the easy on the eyes, not to mention more than game acting of Vera Farmiga and Michelle Monaghan and you've got an endlessly watchable piece of entertainment. The trailer is linked to the title, I highly recommend you check out this flick.

Secondly is a little big TV show premiering Sunday night on AMC called THE KILLING. The best network on television brings you yet another compelling drama that is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly endorse this show without having even seen the thing. I read the Pilot script last year and from that alone I feel more than comfortable giving it my highest recommendation. Add in the fact that my good friend Eric Ladin is a member of this loaded ensemble cast, and I can't imagine a better way to spend an hour of your Sunday night.

So if you're looking to be entertained this weekend or anytime this week, and have 3 or so hours to spare, I suggest you check out these two top notch entertainments of the small and big screen.

Friday February 4th, 2010

UWTL yet again. I'm so frickin tired I almost labeled this post as January.

Today was a good day, a long day, a stressful day, a mellow day, a work day, a mon day.

What? That's not right! It was just Friday right? Not for me, at least not for one more full week. Sure i've mentioned this before, but then again you probably didn't waste your time reading it. I'm working on a movie with a Friday through Tuesday schedule. The days are all bleeding into one another and I think i'm slowly starting to lose my mind. Mind you I have complete confidence I will find it, eventually, but for the moment it is lost.

Long hours, minimal exercise, intense inactivity interspersed with intense activity on occasion.

Production, though a very interesting part of the process, is not for me. At least not in this way at this time.

I gotta start making a bigger push to break in/ make my mark on the scripted world, and that's what I intend to do in the coming months.

In real, possibly valuable, and decent blog news, I've been pondering for quite some time, starting a blog entitled Pilot Lessons. In this blog I will read and watch various Pilots from the recent and past history of television, break them down and build them back up in order to attempt to deconstruct these complex works of art and commerce, that are designed to appear effortless and virtuosic in their finished state.

The truth is, there's lots of Blood, Sweat, Tears and painstaking work that goes into the construction of 30-60 minutes of television that hopefully births years upon years of shows but rarely ever gets beyond the first try, thus resulting in so few pilots out of those ordered and produced that actually make it to series.

There's some fun thrown in the process as well, considering that it's all about constructing interesting, entertaining and compelling stories that your grab your attention enough to make you say, I want more, a lot more.

I'm thinking this ole blog will get started within the next few weeks, with my hope to start off with a series about the masterful pilots of the excellent AMC Series' MAD MEN, BREAKING BAD, and THE WALKING DEAD. All shows near and dear to my heart, on what right now is pound for pound the best network on television.

Thanks for tolerating another dull meandering in my late night life. Hopefully taking to the skies and nose diving into the joys of the written page, will more than make up for it.

Tuesday January 25th/ Wednesday January 26th 2011

Uwtl the last two nights under very different circumstances.

Last night's culprit was hanging around on set fairly later than necessary, followed by a last minute decision to sneak onto the set of one of the biggest movies of 2012. Passed out fully clothed around 2 and woke up at 5, got up with the guilt of not having written, was visited by my crazy up at 5am to work out 56 year old father while half asleep and not really wanting to talk. Then soothed the guilt by writing/editing for a good 45 minutes, then back to sleep.

Tonight's lateness began socially and will end with just milling about. Props to my buddy Will for buying me a Coachella ticket this week without even asking. That shit just sold out!

Two successful nights indeed.

Monday January 24th, 2011

Bah humbug. Uwtl yet again for the littlest of reasons.

It's like a broken record. Was planning to get shit done, opened myself up to distractions, bla bla bla, then 1-4 hours later here I am passing out at the keys and throwing in the towel.

One awesome thing I did accomplish in the latter portion of this eve, was finishing season 1 of BREAKING BAD. Having powered through the first two discs of the season over a reasonable 3-4 month span, I popped in disc #3 thinking I had 3-4 eps to go. Considering I only had the juice for 1 ep, what a nice surprise that that was all there was to watch on disc 3. Not an uncommon occurence for a basic or premium cable show to launch with a manageable 6-7 episodes, but I was unawares.

The following seasons are a solid 13 eps a pop and I thoroughly look forward to getting through those in hopefully less than half the time it took to watch the 1st.

For a good year now I was getting the distinct impression that despite never, or at least barely having seen the show, that it was totally my taste and that in some ways was my favorite show on TV without having watched a frame.

After now getting into it, I can't quite say I feel that insanely strongly about it, but nonetheless it is awesome television and one of a growing number of reasons why AMC is becoming the standard for event television. Between this, MAD MEN (which i'm fully up to speed on), THE WALKING DEAD (another show that had sold me before seeing a frame, and of which i've seen just short of all) and the upcoming crime thriller and western THE KILLING and HELL ON WHEELS, I may soon enough just be able to live on the channel that formerly stood for American Movie Classics. Shite, I may just have to go ahead and watch the dearly departed RUBICON sooner rather than later.

"We know Drama," eh? Haven't had that disproven yet so keep on touting yourself as such AMC.

Thursday January 20th, 2011

Uwtl for no apparent reason. Was going to do a little more writing but the after midnight got away from me.

Now I sit here writing the worst and most mundane blog in the world, that very few people, if anyone, read anyway.

Took it easy today/ tonight and made a small dent in NBC's new 3 hour comedy block. Got to Community and Parks and Rec, which are pound for pound the best comedies if not two of the best shows on Television. Especially Good to have Parks back after something like an 8 month hiatus.

Looking like I have work off tomorrow which is kinda cool but I sure as hell wish i'd gone to sleep a few hours ago as getting up at 6am saturday morning for work is gonna be all kinds of rough.

Alas, I've got no one to blame but myself. Que sera sera.

Tuesday January 18th, 2011/ Wednesday January 19th 2011

Uwtl for the third night running. Last night was way way way too late to even think about writing, having gotten home at 6am. Tonight is more doable at 2:30 as it's time to call it a night.

Not the most productive day of all time after one of the longest days in recent memory, but a good day nonetheless.

Night night.
